New Addenda and Corrigenda
With the publication of our revised and enlarged J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide, we’ve ceased to post addenda and corrigenda to the 2006 edition. Instead, we’ve created new web pages, for the 2017 edition as a whole, for the Chronology and Reader’s Guide, for a revised list of topics in the Reader’s Guide, and for a new supplemental bibliography for the Companion and Guide. Since there has been, so far, only one set of addenda and corrigenda to the new edition, we have not yet created secondary pages listing additions and corrections by date. We’ve also created an addenda and corrigenda page for The Art of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, and updated pages for The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Other Verses from the Red Book, The Lord of the Rings, The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion, and Roverandom.
- Addenda and Corrigenda (general contents)
- The Adventures of Tom Bombadil (2014)
- The Art of The Lord of the Rings (2015)
- The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide (2017)
- Chronology
- Reader’s Guide
- Reader’s Guide List of Topics
- Supplemental Bibliography
- The Lord of the Rings (2004 and later)
- The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion (2014)
- The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion (2005–14), by date
- Roverandom (1998)
The second printing of the new Companion and Guide is in hand, and we’ve heard no complaints about faulty dust-jackets or boxes from this run. Amazon U.K. have been offering the boxed set of three volumes at £78 (reduced from £120), or even less. Book Depository are also discounting the set, if not by as much, but offer free international shipping. (Shame on Book Depository, though, for listing Wayne as the sole author!)
Congratulations on the second printing! Wonderful news…
Your proofreading must have been merciless – so far (having read substantial chunks of the Readers Guide, both volumes) I’ve only spotted one missing bracket and a missing full stop/period. I didn’t take a note of where they were, though.
I noticed an error on page 735 of the Readers Guide (A-M): you refer to the Waterstones 1996 ‘book of the century’ poll being in tandem with “BBC Channel 4′. There is no such channel. The current “BBC4” channel (always referred to in that way) was not in existence at that time so it must have been either “BBC1” of “BBC2” or “Channel 4” (a non-BBC channel). I recall watching the TV programme associated with the poll at the time, but can’t recall the channel…
You’re right, Colin. It should be simply “Channel 4”. We’ll make a correction for p. 735. We’re correct in the mention on p. 360 and in the index.
Congratulations on this websites award from the Tolkien Society, https://www.tolkiensociety.org/2018/04/winners-of-the-tolkien-society-awards-2018-announced/.
Hi, I love the latest edition of the reader’s guide and have been greedily devouring it… One minor error in Part 2, p.1157 “Tolkien may written a little of *The Lay of the Children of Hurin” should probably read “Tolkien may HAVE written…”. Thanks again for all the great work you have both done, long may it continue!
Thanks for this. The error was present already in the first edition, where no one noticed it! We’ll note the correction.
I received my boxed (of the Revised Edition) set via the Royal Mail here in the United States via Alibris a few days ago in a troubled state…even though it came in a cushioned cardboard box which then was inside a “potato sack” labeled Royal Mail / Great Britain. Unfortunately the bottom left edge of the slip case (to the left of the Chronology volume) was split open pretty much the length of it 😦 The box set was still in its shrink wrap.. I guess there had been lots of jostling across that pond during delivery. No glue issues in the slip case (that I recall remember reading about). And all the books all appear to still be in their first printing. Will have to find me some good tape to mend the box. Ah well. Already digging into the Reader’s Guide!
